Position Title: Playschool Director

Reporting to: Regional Manager
Location: Surrey, BC.
Employment Status: Full-Time

Salary: $55,000 - $57,000 Annually + Wage Enhancement

 

Purpose of the Role

The Playschool Director is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, staff management, and overall success of their Tiny Scholars Playschool. This role is hands on, ensuring that the facility complies with Licensing and other regulatory standards, delivers high-quality play-based programming, maintains effective staff management, is financially sound, and fosters a positive and supportive environment for children, families, and staff.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Operational Leadership

  • Oversee the daily operations of the facility, ensuring compliance with British Columbia Child Care Licensing Regulation, representing Tiny Scholars in any Licensing visit, inspection or investigation.
  • Develop and manage schedules for staff and children, ensuring appropriate ratios and educator qualifications are maintained at all times.
  • Coordinate facility maintenance, cleanliness, and safety protocols to provide a healthy learning environment, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Maximize revenue by ensure full capacity enrolment.
  • Provide shift and/or break coverage when needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information related to children, families, staff, and financial arrangements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

2. Play Invitations

Collaborate with educators to design and implement a play-based curriculum that promotes child-led exploration and development that are age and developmentally appropriate via Play Invitations.

  • Review Play Invitations to ensure alignment with the playschool's ABC Formula (Attitude, Beliefs and Competency).
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of all Play Invitations, making adjustments to improve quality and engagement.

3. Staff Management

  • Recruit, hire, and onboard qualified staff, ensuring all certifications and checks are up to date.
  • Provide ongoing supervision, mentorship, training, and support to the team of educators and other playschool staff. This includes managing weekly shift schedules, sick calls and vacation requests, continually ensuring proper coverage and ratio compliance.
  • Conduct monthly staff meetings covering daily operations, health and safety, preventative maintenance topics.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, offering constructive feedback and professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a positive team culture rooted in collaboration, respect, and shared goals.
  • Support all Human Resource functions as required including employee relations, health and safety, performance management and discipline.

4. Child and Family Engagement

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families, addressing questions, concerns, and feedback in a professional and timely manner. This includes conducting tours to potential families and facilitating proper enrolment procedures. 
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with families, providing updates on their child’s progress and facility operations.
  • Plan and host parent engagement events, workshops, and open houses.

5. Inclusion and Diversity

  • Promote an inclusive environment that respects cultural diversity, individual abilities, and learning styles.
  • Implement strategies to support children with diverse needs, working closely with educators, families, agencies, and specialists as necessary.

6. Compliance and Administration

  • Maintain accurate records, including enrollment, attendance, incident reports, and child development documentation.
  • Ensure the facility meets or exceeds licensing requirements, including health and safety standards.
  • Manage the facility’s budget, including payroll, supply procurement, and tuition collection.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory bodies and stakeholders.

7. Marketing and Community Relations

  • Develop and execute strategies to promote the facility and attract new families.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations, schools, and local businesses to enhance programming and community involvement.
  • Represent the facility at networking events, professional associations, and public forums.
  • Manage the playschool’s social media handles following guidelines and procedures, maintaining standards of privacy and professionalism.

8. Crisis and Conflict Management

  • Handle emergencies, including child safety incidents, staffing shortages, or facility issues, according to established protocols including responsiveness to fire, earthquake, evacuations, and playschool closure situations.
  • Address conflicts between staff, children, or families with professionalism and diplomacy.

9. Professional Growth and Advocacy

  • Stay informed of current trends, research, and best practices in early childhood education.
  • Advocate for play-based learning and high-quality child care within the local community and beyond.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development to enhance leadership and program delivery.

Qualifications and Competencies

Required:

  • Valid British Columbia Early Childhood Educator (ECE) certificate; preference for candidates with an Infant Toddler Educator (ITE) certificate. Special Needs Educator (SNE) an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in early childhood education, including leadership or supervisory roles.
  • Strong understanding of the BC Child Care Regulations, Early Learning Framework, and Play Today, with ability to maintain play-based learning principles and guided by developmental milestones while ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Current Emergency Child Care First Aid Certification.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check
  • Immunization Record
  • 3 Letters of Character References

Competencies:

  • Experience managing a licensed child care facility in British Columbia.
  • Familiarity with budgeting, staff scheduling, and operational planning.
  • Ability to prioritize and exercise time management with a positive attitude including working under pressure and maintaining focus during hectic periods.
  • Training or experience in efficient conflict resolution, team leadership, or project management.
